Set into a panel
carving within a panel is an effective way of creating bold relief without having to take the whole of the surface of the stone back to have a raised carving.
Incised
with this technique the outline of the image is carved and all the modelling done within this outline. This can be very effective despite being shallower. It is useful if you require a carving within a rough natural surface too, as this can be left untouched.
