Domesday Project

I first had the idea of carving an extract from the Domesday Book for a show in Salthouse Church in 2006, and am keen to extend this project and make a series of pieces for different locations throughout the UK. It may on one level seem like a strangely incongruous proposal, but I think that as well as a good basis for some contemporary lettering design, it is also a quite thought-provoking idea. The language is very evocative and it really serves to make us think about our place in society and how things have changed since 1085 when William the Conqueror commissioned the survey to assess the extent of the land and resources being owned in England, and thus the taxes he could raise.
