My training as a stone mason, architectural carver and lettercutter has taught me all about shaping and sculpting stone. I like to explore the materials I work with in a three dimensional way. Each stone has its own feel to it, its own unique qualities. Welsh slate for example is more laminated in its structure and tends to want to split naturally along certain planes, and it will need to be shaped more carefully, whereas other materials will exhibit different qualities. I feel it is rewarding to explore the tactile nature and surface finishes possible in different stones, and this can be done by employing a range of different chiselling techniques as well as rubbing and polishing - as can be seen on the Kilkenny limestone piece pictured, where the top is highly polished and the lower section roughly "clawed".

My sculptural influences are varied, I am inspired by all sorts of art including African carving, Indian Classical carving, Aztec sculpture, Eric Gill, Barbara Hepworth, Picasso, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Peter Randall-Page, this list could go on...............
