Black Shuck

There’s a Black Dog who haunts Norfolk. One glimpse of him is supposed to presage ill fortune. There have been many accounts of sightings. His most common name is Shuck, it’s thought to derive partly from the Old English work ‘scucca’ meaning a devil or goblin, and partly from the dialect work ‘shucky’ meaning shaggy or unkempt. He’s also been called ‘Hateful Thing’, ‘Skeff’, ‘Owd Rugman’, ‘Galleytrot’, ‘Old Scarfe’, and ‘Padfoot’.
