Soldiers Hill, Garboldisham

In Garboldisham, between ‘Home Covert’ and the Devil’s Dyke there is a large round-barrow known as ‘Soldier’s Hill’. It is supposed to be the burial place of Boadicea. The only first-hand account we have of her is from the Roman historian Tacitus, who describes her, on the eve of her final battle, releasing a hare between the two armies and watching the course it followed. This would suggest that she was as much a priestess as queen. Whether the zig-zagging of the hare gave any hint of the disaster that was to follow history doesn’t relate.
