Castle Hill, Thetford

Perhaps there’s some truth in the story that the gold and silver bells of Thetford Priory were buried, in secret, deep in the motte of Castle Hill. It’s said that they were buried by monks during the reign of Henry VIII to save them from being confiscated by the King’s agents at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In this poem I’ve given them names, remembering how bells were once Christened with holy water from the font.
