Potter Heigham drummer

A Potter Heigham girl fell for a soldier at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. He courted her through the winter. They’d meet at Swim Cutes. When the Broads froze he came skating across the water, playing his drum, in the full uniform of the ‘Holy Boys’ (the Norfolk Regiment). But one day he came skating towards her and his drum made no sound. She reached for his hand but felt only icy water. She called his name but there was nobody there. The next day the men of Potter Heigham fished his body out of the Broad. He’d gone through the ice.
