Mrs A. Walter Thomas heard this story from a nurse-maid when she was a child. It’s the East Anglian version of Rumpelstiltskin. She wrote it as she remembered hearing it. This excerpt describes the moment when the king tells his wife how he’s seen the ‘impet’ spinning, and heard him speak his own name… the name his wife is trying to guess. The story continues: ‘And lork how she did clap her hands for joy, but she didn’t say a word…’
